چکیده

We study the computational complexity of approximately counting the number of independent sets of a graph with maximum degree Δ. More generally, for an input graph G = (V,E) and an activity λ > 0, we are interested in the quantity ZG(λ) defined as the sum over independent sets I weighted as w(I) = λ|I|. In statistical physics, ZG(λ) is the partition function for the hard-core model, which is an idealized model of a gas where the particles have non-negibile size. Recently, an interesting phase transition was shown to occur for the complexity of approximating the partition function. Weitz showed an FPAS for the partition function for any graph of maximum degree Δ when Δ is constant and λ < λc(TΔ) := (Δ − 1)Δ−1/(Δ − 2). The quantity λc(TΔ) is the critical point for the so-called uniqueness threshold on the infinite, regular tree of degree Δ. On the other side, Sly proved that there does not exist efficient (randomized) approximation algorithms for λc(TΔ) < λ < λc(TΔ) + ε(Δ), unless NP=RP, for some function ε(Δ) > 0. We remove the upper bound in the assumptions of Sly’s result for Δ = 4, 5, that is, we show that there does not exist efficient randomized approximation algorithms for all λ > λc(TΔ) for Δ = 3 and Δ ≥ 6. Sly’s inapproximability result uses a clever reduction, combined with a second-moment analysis of Mossel, Weitz and Wormald which prove torpid mixing of the Glauber dynamics for sampling from the associated Gibbs distribution on almost every regular graph of degree Δ for the same range of λ as in Sly’s result. We extend Sly’s result by improving upon the technical work of Mossel et al., via a more detailed analysis of independent sets in random regular graphs.

#BIS-Hardness for 2-Spin Systems on Bipartite Bounded Degree Graphs in the Tree Non-uniqueness Region

Counting independent sets on bipartite graphs (#BIS) is considered a canonical counting problem of intermediate approximation complexity. It is conjectured that #BIS neither has an FPRAS nor is as hard as #Sat to approximate. We study #BIS in the general framework of two-state spin systems in bipartite graphs. Such a system is parameterized by three numbers (β, γ, λ), where β (respectively γ) r...

Before introducing probabilistically checkable proofs, I shortly give an overview of the historical development in the field of inapproximability results which are closely related to PCPs. A foundational paper from Johnson in 1974 states approximation algorithms and inapproximability results for Max SAT, Set Cover, Independent Set, and Coloring. Exponential Time Complexity of Weighted Counting of Independent Sets

We consider weighted counting of independent sets using a rational weight x: Given a graph with n vertices, count its independent sets such that each set of size k contributes xk. This is equivalent to computation of the partition function of the lattice gas with hard-core self-repulsion and hard-core pair interaction. We show the following conditional lower bounds: If counting the satisfying a...

ARC Proposal: Phase Transitions in the Complexity of Counting

The problem of estimating the partition function for the hard-core lattice gas model on finite graphs has a striking phase transition in its computational complexity that has a remarkable connection to phase transitions in the model on infinite trees. For a graph G = (V,E) and activity λ > 0, the hard-core model is defined on the set I(G) of independent sets of G where a set I ∈ I(G) has weight...

Counting the number of independent sets in chordal graphs

We study some counting and enumeration problems for chordal graphs, especially concerning independent sets. We first provide the following efficient algorithms for a chordal graph: (1) a linear-time algorithm for counting the number of independent sets; (2) a linear-time algorithm for counting the number of maximum independent sets; (3) a polynomial-time algorithm for counting the number of ind...
